In 2017, a report was published by United Nations Children’s fund (UNICEF) positioning Nigeria as the country with 2nd highest child mortality rate, with 12.8 children in every 100 not making it to 5 years of age. The leading cause of this death was seen to be Pneumonia and Diarrhea.
Another report put forward by the Child Mortality Organization in 2019 show child mortality rate as informed by United Nations inter-agency group for child mortality estimation was 11.9 deaths per 100 children with the leading still as Pneumonia and Diarrhea.
Pneumonia is an infection that inflames air sacs in one or both lungs, and fill it with fluid.
With pneumonia, the air sacs may fill with fluid or pus. The infection can be life-threatening to anyone, but particularly to infants, children and people over 65.
Symptoms include a cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills and difficulty breathing.
Antibiotics can treat many forms of pneumonia.
Diarrhoea is usually caused by a virus called Rotavirus, or sometimes, contaminated food. Rotavirus spreads easily among infants and young children an can be deadly to them. The virus can cause severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. Children who get rotavirus disease can become dehydrated and will need to be hospitalized.
According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), Good hygiene like handwashing and cleanliness are important, but are not enough to control the spread of the disease. Rotavirus vaccine is the best way to protect your child against rotavirus disease. Most children (about 9 out of 10) who get the vaccine will be protected from severe rotavirus disease. About 7 out of 10 children will be protected from rotavirus disease of any severity.
This year, Milky Express Breastfeeding foundation will focus on giving free Rotavirus Vaccine to 1000 Nigerian children who do not have access to this vaccine. This vaccine will prevent them from getting this virus which is one of the leading causes of death in Nigerian Children. This exercise will be carried out between August 2020 and August 2021.
